The system being built and delivered, designed by OMC, is located near the city of Monterrey in Mexico. It was ordered by a paper mill, focused on environmental protection, to reduce collection and consumption of fresh water. Therefore, it asked OMC to provide a system that collects and treats part of the water coming from the drainage of a biological system of the city to make it suitable for industrial uses, in compliance with the standards set forth for paper production. This type of application renders our system unique in the world; only OMC is able to offer solutions of recovery systems for this type of waters and provide to the Customer water suitable for industrial uses starting from the liquid waste of a city.

This area of Mexico has difficulties in finding water, which is extracted from very deep wells; the Paper industry particularly suffers from this lack, since it requires a high consumption of water. Therefore, OMC’s solution to recover already treated water that would be discharged in the river, is ideal for greater energy savings, in kw. Afterwards, the paper mill will submit to OMC, the water used for producing paper; also in this case, OMC has the task to treat the water biologically with discharge quality standards in line with Mexican laws.

Description of the Systems

Primary waters

450 m3/h of water are collected from the pipes of the biological system of the City of Monterrey; after the proper dosing of chemical agents, the water is conveyed to a first phase consisting of a decanter having the purpose to remove the Suspended solids contained in it. Afterwards, it is conveyed to a set of pressure filters, first sand filters and then a special filtering bed. At the exit of these filters, the water is conveyed to two Inverse Osmosis systems. As required, with this system, 330 m3/h of osmotic water are delivered to the paper mill, coming from a civil biological system.

 

Biological treatment of waste waters coming from the paper mill

The paper mill conveys to the Biological system, 330 m3/h of process waste waters; after a first screening phase and a suitable chemical treatment, waters are cleared through floatation and conveyed to the Anaerobic biological system as 1st stage. After the first removal of COD and BOD, waters are conveyed as 2nd final stage to the active-sludge Aerobic biological system. Clarification of the water destined to be discharged, takes places through sedimentation. Waters that are discharged into the river are in line with the standards set forth by law, while the thickened biological sludge coming from the decanter is mixed with the previously produced primary sludge and conveyed to an OMC’s sludge press. The dewatered sludge is conferred to a landfill as special waste.
